HARDISTY, Alta. - Oil pipeline giant Enbridge officially opened its new contract terminal in Hardisty on Tuesday, a 19-tank facility capable of holding 7.5 million barrels of crude oil from the oilsands.

One of the largest in North America, the Hardisty terminal, is the starting place for two major pipelines that will initially carry one million barrels a day of bitumen to United States markets.

TransCanada's Keystone pipeline will soon be in service, followed next year by Enbridge's Alberta Clipper.

To get an idea of what 7.5 million barrels of oil looks like, imagine 48,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Enbridge said the new terminal will ensure the required storage and pipelines are in place to handle continually increasing oilsands production, and has plenty of room for future expansion.

With many pipelines merging in Hardisty, the town has been a pipeline centre since the 1950s. The town is about 160 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
