While world delegations were gathering in Durban, South Africa for the seventeenth round of negotiations of the UNFCCC, environmentalists from around the world gathered at the Everyone is Downstream conference to challenge the impasse the talks have reached in recent years. The conference targeted recent moves by the oil industry from crude oil to oil sands and oil shale extraction around the world, in the model of the Canadian Tar Sands. Speaking on behalf of his region, Maledy, Madagascar, Jean Pierre Ratsimbazafy addressed the crowd on the threat such extraction would have.
