CALGARY, Alberta, April 16 (Reuters) - Energy ministers from North and South American countries with large heavy oil reserves have established a working group to develop better extraction and environmental technology, Canada's natural resources minister said on Friday.

The collaboration, formed at a meeting in Washington on energy and climate, brings together Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, the United States, Venezuela as well as Canada, which is known for its huge oil sands deposits, Natural Resources Minister Christian Paradis said.

The group will work in partnership with other heavy oil organizations, oil companies and environmental organizations, he said.

Also at the Washington meeting, Canada and the United States agreed to expand agreement on developing energy and carbon-reduction technology under the countries' clean energy dialogue, begun in 2009, Paradis said. (Reporting by Jeffrey Jones; editing by Peter Galloway)
