A women's group from Walpole Island First Nation will host a traditional aboriginal ceremony today in support of a panel study into the proposed Shell refinery project.
The ceremony will be held at Seager Park, near Courtright, at noon.
The women of Akii Kwe are supporting a grassroots campaign to have the Canadian government subject Shell Canada to the highest level of environmental assessment under Canadian law for the review of the company's proposed tar sands crude oil refinery on the St. Clair River. Local First Nations leaders are calling for a panel study that includes First Nations representation.
During the ceremony group members will be planting trees to commemorate endangered tree species they say will be removed if the project forges ahead.
