Oil Sands Truth: Shut Down the Tar Sands

"First Nations fine with tar sands" -- corporate spin.

Fred McDonald, listed as "proof" of how good things are for Fort MacKay, has written a book where he lies about his own history and got Syncrude to publish it. He doesn't have cred even in the village itself.

AMERICAN MEDICINE

Billy Bob: "The doctor said he'd have me walking within two weeks."

Skeeter: "Was he successful?"

Billy Bob: "Yep. I had to sell my car to pay his bill."

ABORIGINAL SEAL OF APPROVAL

I was in oilsands country yesterday for the grand opening of the ATCO/Fort McKay First Nations Creeburn Lake Lodge. All kinds of interesting stories around that one, but here's the most intriguing.

If anyone has credibility about the environment and the oil sands, it's the Fort McKay First Nations.

The reserve, an hour north of Fort McMurray, is surrounded by Shell's Albian Sands, Syncrude and Suncor.

These people and their ancestors fished and hunted the area for hundreds of years. And they are quite HAPPY - at least all the ones I talked to - with the environmental efforts of the oilsands companies.

"Compared to 20 years ago, it's 100% better," says Fort McKay Group of Companies CEO Fred McDonald.

"The companies now take the environment very seriously. They are doing the right things, adopting the right technologies. They are talking to us.

"As the oil is being taken out, they are taking responsibility for reclaiming the land. They have respect for Mother Nature. Surely their (good working) relationships with us prove that?"

More on the four-star hotel in the bush, and aboriginal business efforts tomorrow.
