Land, regardless of whether covered by forests, tundra or grasslands, is threatened by mining operations such as Alberta’s vast open tar pit operations, or through incredible networks of “right of way” cuts for pipelines that extend in the hundreds of thousands of miles, all told, and across the continent in four directions and to three oceans—either through feeding the tarsand operations with fossil fuel energy or through feeding energy markets from tarsand operations after production. In the case of pipeline right of ways, they can blast directly through mountains or be buried in permafrost if needed, to get the energy to move.

Refineries retrofit for goop and gunk
Some oil companies are staking much of their future on the gunky oil that comes out of Canada’s oil sands. Automation has a piece of this action.
The Wall Street Journal reported the first crude from the Albertan oil sands reached the giant Cushing, Okla., pipeline hub last year.

TransCanada's proposed Keystone pipeline consists of 1,845 miles of 30-inch pipeline running from Alberta Canada to Illinois. The proposed route has the line going through eastern South Dakota, where it's running into opposition from landowners.
TransCanada says it would pay for long and short term damage the pipeline may cause, but some landowners are concerned with more than the money.

Went back to Wild Rose country a few weeks ago.
Fuelled by a major energy boom, Alberta hasn’t really changed from when I was last there two years ago.
Except for the fact both Edmonton and Calgary boast a population of more than one million, there is road construction chaos everywhere – infrastructure is crumbling.

In a sign of the expanding international ambitions of China's oil companies, China National Petroleum Corp. has bought the rights to explore for oil in Canada.
The state-owned parent of Hong Kong- and New York-listed PetroChina Co. will develop an oil-sands field that is estimated to contain about two billion barrels of a thick and hard-to-process form of oil called bitumen.

The National Energy Board has scheduled a hearing on an application from Enbridge Pipelines Inc. to construct and operate the Canadian portion of the Alberta Clipper Expansion Project.
The Canadian portion of Alberta Clipper would involve the construction and operation of approximately 1,074 km of new 914 mm outside diameter (36-inch) oil pipeline between Enbridge’s Hardisty Terminal and the Canada - United States border near Gretna, Manitoba.

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - TransCanada Corp. (TRP.TO: Quote) said on Tuesday it plans to boost the capacity of its proposed Keystone oil pipeline from Alberta to the U.S. Midwest to 590,000 barrels a day, from 435,000 barrels, after shippers committed to sending more crude on the line.
"The issue has gained prominence mainly because of several proposals
to construct pipelines linking Alberta with the coast at Prince
Rupert or Kitimat. Crude oil from the oil sands would be pumped west
for export, while "condensate" used to thin the thick crude in the
pipeline would be removed and sent back eastward along a parallel pipe."

BISMARCK – The North Dakota Industrial Commission is urging construction of the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline, saying it has the potential to alleviate an international pipeline bottleneck that hurts the sale of North Dakota crude oil.
